Big Stone Gap Rebels
The Big Stone Gap Rebels were a minor league baseball team from Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and played in the Mountain States League. The Mountain States League was a Class D league comprised of teams from the mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia and was a successful circuit for its time, although it was cut short by WWII. The Rebels played at Bullitt Park, which is still in use as a public park with athletic facilities today.
Baseball in this era was deeply rooted in local identity, and teams like the Rebels helped foster community spirit and the development of America's pastime. The team played during a time when professional baseball was rapidly expanding across small towns, and saw many cities and states establish their own leagues and teams.
