Mount Sterling Essex

The Mount Sterling Essex were a minor league baseball team based in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. They competed in the Class D Blue Grass League during the 1922 and 1923 seasons. The team’s nickname, “Essex,” came from a sponsorship deal with the local Ragan-Gay Motor Company, which offered to provide uniforms in exchange for naming rights. The name referred to the Essex automobile, a popular car model at the time manufactured by the Hudson Motor Car Company. This type of promotional naming was common in early 20th-century baseball. The Essex played their home games at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
