Greenville Majors

The Greenville Majors were a Class D club from Greenville, Texas, between 1946 and 1957. They were originally in the East Texas League in 1946, Then moved to the Big State League from 1947-50 and 1953. After a hiatus, they played an additional year in the Sooner State League in 1957.

The Majors team and their stadium, Majors Stadium, were both named for Lt. Truett Jay Majors, who was the first person from Greenville to be killed in WWII.

The Majors had a "major" highlight when the team defeated the New York Yankees in 1949! On April 10, they played a scrimmage against the Yankees in Greenville. This was a time when major league teams would barnstorm after spring training. The Yankees split their squad with half playing in Beaumont and half in Greenville. Heavy rain delayed the Yankees flight, and the team ended up driving in the rain from Dallas to Greenville. In front of 3,000 people, the Majors defeated the Yankees 4-3.
