Pennington Gap Miners
The Pennington Gap Miners were a short-lived baseball team that played in the Mountain States League from 1948-1951. The team played at Leeman Field in Pennington Gap. The Mountain States League was a Class D league that consisted of teams from Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. The Miners generally struggled with attendance, averaging a couple hundred fans per gap in what was, at the time, supposedly the world's largest enclosed ballpark.
The team played during a time when professional baseball was rapidly expanding across small towns, and saw many cities and states establish their own leagues and teams.
