Atlantic City Surf

The Atlantic City Surf were an independent minor league baseball team based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, active from 1998 to 2008. The Surf played their home games at The Sandcastle, a 5,500-seat stadium constructed on Bader Field, Atlantic City's now defunct municipal airpot.

In their inaugural season, the Surf clinched the league's first championship by defeating the Bridgeport Bluefish. They were led by Juan "The Large Human" Thomas who had a great nickname and hit 33 home runs.

Throughout their 11 seasons, the Surf consistently performed well, making multiple playoff appearances, though they did not secure another championship. In 2007, after being sold and seeking improved financial viability, the team moved to the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am League). Under manager Chris Carminucci, they reached the playoffs in both 2007 and 2008 but were eliminated in the first round each time. Notably, former major league star Cecil Fielder managed the team in 2008.

Despite on-field successes, the Surf faced financial challenges, including declining attendance and limited corporate sponsorships in a town with a unusual corporate base. The team would fold after the 2008 season.

Other notable Surf alumni include Ruben Sierra and Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams.
