Cairo, Illinois, once home to a Kitty League team mostly known as the “Egyptians,” played professional baseball for 18 seasons under names including the Egyptians, Giants, and Champions. Founded at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, Cairo was envisioned as a shipping hub but declined due to flooding, railroad bypasses, and economic shifts. Baseball first arrived in 1897 with a Central League team, and the Egyptians later competed in the Kitty League from 1903–1906, 1911–1914, 1922–1924, and 1946–1950, ending as the Cairo Dodgers. Once a thriving town of nearly 20,000, Cairo’s population has since dwindled to about 1,700.
