The Akron Rubbermen, based in Akron, Ohio, take their name from the city's status as the "Rubber Capital of the World." Akron has been home to Goodyear, B.F. Goodrich, and Firestone since 1880.

The Rubbermen name came in 1912, when the club moved into the Class B Central League under player-manager Lee Fohl, who had led the same club to four straight Ohio-Pennsylvania League pennants from 1908 to 1911 as the Akron Champs. The results didn't follow him to the new league: Akron finished 59-68, in last place among the eight teams.

Fohl's stint in Akron turned out to be the lead-up to a much bigger career. Starting in 1915, he managed the Cleveland Indians for five seasons, assembling the core, including pitchers Stan Coveleski and Jim Bagby and a trade for outfielder Tris Speaker, that would carry the franchise to its first World Series title in 1920, two years after Fohl had resigned. He went on to manage the St. Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox as well, finishing an 11-year major league managerial career with a 713-792 record.

The Central League itself was a Class B circuit that ran, often sporadically, from 1903 into the 1930s (with a later 1948-51 revival), fielding teams mostly from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
