The Aberdeen Pheasants, based in Aberdeen, South Dakota, played 26 seasons from 1946 through 1971, winning the regular season pennant in 1947 and 1964 and the playoff title in 1949 and 1961. A local contest picked the nickname, an obvious choice in a state known for ring-necked pheasant hunting.
Bob Turley, the 1958 Cy Young winner, pitched the Pheasants to the 1949 playoff title. The club peaked in 1964, when the parent Baltimore Orioles came to Aberdeen for a June exhibition against a roster carrying Jim Palmer, Lou Piniella and Mark Belanger, and the Pheasants went on to win the pennant by twelve and a half games. When the league folded after 1971, the 27-year Aberdeen working agreement, dating to the St. Louis Browns, was described in Baltimore as the longest in baseball history.
