The Decatur Commodores, nicknamed the “Commies,” were a long-running minor league baseball team from Decatur that played from 1900-1974, primarily in the Three-I League, and won league titles in 1928, 1952, 1953, and 1957. In the 1920s, they shared Staley Field with the Decatur Staleys football team, which later became the Chicago Bears. Despite the unusual nickname, “Commies” referred to Commodore Stephen Decatur, the city’s namesake, and notable alumni included Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell.
