The Ashland Colonels played in the Mountain State League from 1939 to 1942. Although it was called the Mountain State (singular) League and featured teams from West Virginia, the Colonels were the lone entry from Kentucky, given Ashland's home right along the Kentucky-West Virginia border. They competed against teams such as the Beckley Bengals and Huntington Bees. The Colonels were the last professional team in Ashland until 1993, when the Frontier League put a franchise there.
The Colonels were one of many teams in smaller towns and cities during this era, as Americans looked for recreational outlets and America's pastime swept the country.
