The Williamson Red Birds played the Mountain State League for its entire 1937-42 run, as the Colts for two seasons and the Red Birds from 1939 on, with playoff trips every year and the 1940 championship under Harrison Wickel.
Stan Musial arrived in June 1938 as a 17-year-old pitcher still in high school. In 1939 he went 9-2 but walked 85 in 92 innings, and Wickel recommended the Cardinals release him.
