Evangeline League: Cajun Country's Baseball League
The Evangeline League was Cajun country's own professional circuit, and its rosters read like a Louisiana map: the Rayne Rice Birds from the rice belt, the Crowley Millers, the New Iberia Pelicans, the Houma Buccaneers down in bayou country, and the Baton Rouge Red Sticks, whose name translates the city's own. From the late 1930s into the 1950s, these towns turned out on summer nights for baseball the way they turned out for everything else in south Louisiana.
The league reached beyond Louisiana too, with the Natchez Pilgrims across the river in Mississippi and the Port Arthur Tarpons on the Texas Gulf Coast.
