The Clay City Nine were a baseball team from Clay City, Kentucky, from around the turn of the 20th century into the 1920s. The Nine were a local town team that played against teams from Lexington, Louisville, and around the state, with no clear league affiliation. In 1903 the Nine beat the Newport Reds, then one of the best teams in the country, in one of their more notable games. A later Clay City Nine played in the Central Kentucky Baseball League in the 1950s. Town teams like the Nine were a staple of small-town life during this era, as Americans looked for recreational outlets and America's pastime swept the country.
