Des Moines was home to the Demons in the mid-1920s, and the name came back in 1959. The Demons were the moniker of the city's Western League team starting in 1925, and that first Demons team won the league with a 98-70 record, one game ahead of the Denver Bears. Six Demons were named to the Western League All-Star team. The Demons repeated as champions in 1926 before the name went away.
The Des Moines Demons were revived in 1959 as a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate and played through 1961 in the Three-I League (the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League). The 1959 team was led by Cal Emery, who hit .323 with 27 home runs and 129 RBI and was named league MVP. The Demons reached the championship series that year but came up short. The name was retired after 1961 when the Three-I League folded, and the city's current club, the Iowa Cubs, arrived in 1969.
