The Duncan Uttmen, based in Duncan, Oklahoma, carried one of the strangest names in minor league baseball history, playing in the Class D Sooner State League in 1949 and 1950 under a name taken from the team's own owner, Otto Utt. The franchise began in 1947 as the Duncan Cementers, named for the Halliburton Cementers, the national champion semi-pro team backed by the Halliburton company in its founding hometown of Duncan, and Halliburton bought the pro club's uniforms. In the spring of 1949 the company refused, reportedly because the players were "not gentlemen on the ball field." Utt, a former pro catcher who caught for his own club at age 43 and whose wife kept the team's books, spent $1,200 of his own money on new uniforms and put his own name on them in red lettering. The Uttmen name lasted two seasons. The 1949 club was the best team Duncan fielded in the league, going 65-74 and drawing 36,678 fans to the Duncan Bowl, but the 1950 season collapsed and the franchise moved mid-season to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where it became the Shawnee Hawks. Duncan has not hosted professional baseball since. The Sooner State League was a Class D league that ran from 1947 through 1957, consisting of teams from small cities across Oklahoma.
