The Greenville Spinners were the name of Greenville, South Carolina's minor league team on and off from 1908 to 1962, a nod to the textile mills that dominated the city's economy. The first Spinners, in the Carolina Association in 1908, had a hometown kid named Joe Jackson in the outfield, and photos from that season show him in the club's uniform with its capital G. Jackson hit .346 for Greenville before being sold to the Philadelphia Athletics that August, and the Shoeless Joe nickname was born in the Carolina Association that summer.
The Spinners name returned in 1919 and was used through the 1920s (with three league titles), in 1938, from 1946 to 1950 (winning the 1948 pennant), and finally from 1961 to 1962. Tommy Lasorda pitched for the 1949 Spinners at Meadowbrook Park, which the club shared with the Greenville Black Spinners, who played there on Monday nights.
