The Harlan Smokies played the Mountain States League from 1948 to 1954, giving Bloody Harlan something to cheer after the mine wars of the 1930s, and drew around 47,000 fans a year to Browning-Leonard Park in their first seasons. The name was revived in the Appalachian League in 1961 and 1962.
That second club had a 19-year-old Mel Stottlemyre on the 1961 staff, and on June 28, 1962, Denny McLain threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in his first appearance for Harlan before being promoted after one more start. The 1964 season was the last for professional baseball in Harlan.
