The Madisonville Miners, from Madisonville, Kentucky, were a Kitty League team in 1916, 1922, and, for their longest stretch, 1946 to 1955, when they were a Chicago White Sox affiliate. The name comes from the coal mining industry that still anchors the western Kentucky economy around Madisonville.
The 1922 Miners ran away with the league title at 73-39, eleven and a half games clear of Hopkinsville, only to have it stripped for using an ineligible player. The postwar Miners never won a pennant but reached the playoff finals five times and won it all in 1949 and 1952, never finishing higher than third in the regular season in any of those years. Bob Buhl, who went 19-10 for the 1947 club, later won 166 games in the majors and a World Series ring with the 1957 Milwaukee Braves.
