The Mobile Swamp Angels, based in Mobile, Alabama, played in the Southern League in 1887, compiling a 5-21 record before the club came apart. It was Mobile's first season in the league and one of the shortest team runs in Alabama baseball history.

Professional baseball had arrived in Mobile the year before, in the Gulf League, a four-team independent circuit that split its franchises between Mobile and New Orleans, two clubs to a city. It ran from June 20 to October 31, 1886, and the champion was the Acid Iron Earths, a Mobile club that went 20-11 and took its name from a local patent medicine company. The second Mobile entry finished a game back at 19-12. The Gulf League never played another season.

When it folded, both cities moved up to the Southern League for 1887. New Orleans took the Pelicans name and won the pennant at 74-40. Mobile took the Swamp Angels name and won five games. A newspaper survey of the league that season ran through the clubs by nickname, listing Mobile as the Swamp-angels, New Orleans as the Pelicans, and Memphis as the Brownlegs.

The city kept at it. Mobile fielded the Blackbirds through the 1890s, then the Bluebirds, then the Sea Gulls from 1905 through 1917, and finally the Bears, who arrived in 1918 and became the name that stuck for the next four decades. Five Hall of Fame players were born in Mobile: Satchel Paige, Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey, Billy Williams, and Ozzie Smith.
