The Mount Sterling Essex were a minor league team based in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, that competed in the Class D Blue Grass League during the 1922 and 1923 seasons. The nickname came from a sponsorship deal with the local Ragan-Gay Motor Company, which offered to provide uniforms in exchange for naming rights. The name referred to the Essex automobile, a popular car of the time built by the Hudson Motor Car Company; this type of promotional naming was common in early 20th-century baseball. The Essex played their home games at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
