The Springfield Browns, from Springfield, Illinois, played from 1938 to 1949 in the Three-I League (the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League) as a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Browns.
The Three-I League (the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League) was a Class B circuit that ran from 1901 through 1961, with pauses for World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Though rooted primarily in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa, the league also drew clubs from Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota as its core membership contracted in later years. In the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s, teams existed in thousands of small towns across the United States, as Americans looked for recreational activities and entertainment in the era before TV.
The Browns won the Three-I playoff title in 1939 despite a fourth-place, 65-55 regular season finish, knocking off Evansville and then Decatur in the playoffs. The Browns were consistently in the top half of the league but folded after a last-place 1949 season.
Our Springfield Browns design is based on program artwork from the original team.
The Browns have a number of major league alumni, most famously Don Larsen, who pitched for them in 1949, seven years before his perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Roy Sievers, the first American League Rookie of the Year in 1949, also played for the Browns.
