The Welch Miners played the Mountain State League from 1937 to 1942 at Blakely Field, a park first built for a team of actual coal miners, and made the playoffs every year without winning the title. Re-formed in the Appalachian League in 1946, they won the league in 1952 and 1953 before money trouble forced a move to Marion, Virginia, after 1955.
Dave Bristol, a 1951 Miner, went on to manage the Reds, Brewers, Braves, and Giants and is credited with helping build the Big Red Machine.
