The Mayfield Clothiers played the Kitty League (Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee) in three stretches, 1922-24, 1936-41, and 1946-55, and won the league title five times: 1922, 1923, 1937, 1941, and 1950. The name, and the alternate 1920s name Pantsmakers, points to the town's clothing industry.
Mayfield was the first team to integrate the Kitty League: on June 26, 1952, hometown pitcher Mickey Stubblefield, who had traveled with the Kansas City Monarchs, started and won the first Kitty League game played by an African-American player. Two-time All-Star Bob Skinner also came through Mayfield on his way to World Series rings with the Pirates and Cardinals, and 1937 pitcher Elmer Wright was one of the Bedford Boys killed on Omaha Beach on D-Day.
