Baseball in Quincy dates back to 1883, with the “Gems” nickname becoming the city’s most recognizable baseball identity across several minor league eras. The Quincy Gems played in the Three-I League during the 1910s and again from 1946-1956, winning league titles in 1913, 1951, 1953, and 1954, including several unlikely playoff runs after modest regular seasons. The Three-I League was a prominent Midwestern minor league that reflected the popularity of small-town baseball before the rise of television entertainment. The Gems name briefly returned in 1964 before the franchise became the Quincy Cubs.
