Sooner State League (1947-1957): Oklahoma's Oil Boom Baseball League

The Sooner State League was Oklahoma's own, a Class D circuit that ran from 1947 to 1957 through the state's oil-patch and ranching towns. Its rosters carried some of the best nicknames in minor league history: the Ada Herefords from cattle country, the Seminole Oilers, and the Duncan Uttmen, a team its owner named after himself. The McAlester Rockets won five league championships as a Yankees farm club, and it was in McAlester that a young Dorrel Herzog picked up the nickname Whitey.
