The High Desert Mavericks, based in Adelanto, California, played 26 seasons in the California League from 1991 through 2016. The franchise arrived when the Riverside Red Wave was purchased and moved to the Mojave Desert by the Brett brothers, an ownership group that included Hall of Famer George Brett, and won the league championship in its very first season under manager Bruce Bochy, who would go on to win three World Series titles managing the San Francisco Giants.
The Mavericks won four league titles in all: 1991, 1993, 1997, and 2016. The last one came in the franchise's final season, a 3-0 championship sweep that let the team go out as champions the same way it came in. The 1997 club was powered by league MVP Mike Stoner, who hit .358 with 33 home runs and a league-record 142 RBIs.
Their ballpark sat at high altitude beside Highway 395 and was one of the most hitter-friendly parks in professional baseball, so much so that scouts routinely discounted offensive numbers put up there. Future big leaguers who passed through Adelanto included Kyle Seager, Michael Pineda, Ketel Marte, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart. The Mavericks were also the first California League team to draw over 200,000 fans in a season and the first in league history to have cheerleaders.
