The Houma Buccaneers, based in Houma, Louisiana, were the first professional baseball team to call Houma home, entering the Evangeline League in 1940. The name fit the bayou setting: Houma sits deep in the Terrebonne Parish wetlands, where centuries of French, Spanish, and Native American history had left a culture with strong ties to the waterways.

The Buccaneers' run in Houma lasted less than a full season. Owner Carlos Moore's club drew poorly enough that the franchise relocated on June 27, 1940, finishing out the year in Natchez, Mississippi, as the Natchez Pilgrims. There had been speculation the club might instead become a road team headquartered in Crowley, but the transfer to Natchez was confirmed by a semi-official league announcement out of Lafayette. Houma returned to the Evangeline League in 1946 under the Indians name, that franchise winning championships in 1946 and 1948 before folding after the 1952 season. Baseball artifacts from Houma's Evangeline League era are preserved in the Ellender Memorial Library at Nicholls State University in nearby Thibodaux.

The Evangeline League was a Class D minor league (Class C from 1949) that operated primarily in southern and central Louisiana from 1934 through 1957, with a wartime pause from 1943 through 1945. Named for the Acadian folk heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 epic poem, the league was nicknamed the "Pepper Sauce League" or the "Tabasco Circuit" by fans and sportswriters, a nod to the Cajun country setting and the volatile brand of baseball played there.
