The Newport Canners were a minor league baseball team from Newport, Tennessee, named for the local canning industry. They played in the Appalachian League from 1937–42 and the Mountain States League from 1948–50, both Class D circuits serving small towns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Like other Tennessee teams in the league, the Canners struggled with low attendance and financial difficulties despite the leagues’ overall success. Their most notable figure was Red Lucas, a former major leaguer who managed the team in 1942 after pitching nearly 300 MLB games in the 1920s and 30s.
