The Port Arthur Sea Hawks, based in Port Arthur, Texas, played in the Big State League from 1955 through 1957, the franchise having traveled through the Gulf Coast League and the Evangeline League before settling on the Texas side of the Sabine River. Port Arthur was an industrial city shaped almost entirely by oil. The refinery complex that grew up there after Spindletop made the surrounding region one of the densest concentrations of petrochemical infrastructure in the world, but the city's position on Sabine Lake at the edge of the Intracoastal Waterway gave it a waterfront identity that the "Sea Hawks" name captured better than anything oil-related might have.
The franchise operated as the Sea Hawks in 1955, then continued through the Big State League's final two seasons under different names, finishing out 1957 as the Port Arthur Redlegs as the circuit contracted around them.
The Big State League was a Class B circuit that ran from 1947 through 1957, fielding teams exclusively from across Texas. Named for the state's reputation as the nation's largest, the league stretched from the Gulf Coast to the plains of West Texas, bringing professional baseball to cities the higher-classification Texas League had never reached.
