The Reidsville Luckies took their name from Lucky Strike cigarettes, manufactured locally by the American Tobacco Company, and even played their home games at a ballpark called Lucky Strike Park. The franchise first played in the Bi-State League from 1935 to 1940, returned for one season in the Tri-State League in 1947, and then joined the Carolina League in 1948, where they remained through 1954 as the Luckies.

Pitcher Steve Ridzik made his professional debut with Reidsville before going on to a twelve-season major league career with the Phillies, Reds, Giants, Indians, and Senators from 1950 to 1966. Infielder Dick Culler, a veteran of several big league seasons, also played for Reidsville, hitting over .330 in multiple seasons there while teaching school in the offseason.

For their final season in 1955, the team changed its name to the Reidsville Phillies after affiliating with Philadelphia, and the franchise folded for good at the end of that year. A concrete stanchion from the old ballpark still stands at a Reidsville High School field today, and players are said to rub it for luck before games. The Luckies name itself was revived in 2021 as a summer collegiate team playing in the Old North State League.
