The Salisbury Senators, based in Salisbury, Maryland, was one of two clubs (along with Cambridge) to field a team in all 16 active years of the Eastern Shore League. The team played under several names across its history: the Salisbury Indians (1922 to 1928 and 1937 to 1938), the Salisbury Senators for a single 1939 season as a Washington Senators affiliate, and the Salisbury Cardinals (1940 to 1941 and 1946 to 1949) as a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate.
Salisbury won three Eastern Shore League championships, in 1937, 1938, and 1940. The 1937 title is the most remembered: Salisbury had 21 wins wiped out in June for a roster violation, dropping the club back toward .500, then caught fire from August on, going 31-3 down the stretch behind pitcher Joe Kohlman's 25-1 record, to win the pennant anyway under manager Jake Flowers. Gene Corbett, a former major leaguer, managed the Salisbury Cardinals in 1948 and 1949 and stayed in Salisbury for the rest of his life, dying there in 2009 at age 95.
Salisbury baseball didn't end when the Eastern Shore League folded in 1949. A reconstituted Salisbury Indians team returned just two years later, joining the Class B Interstate League in 1951, though that revival lasted only two seasons. Professional baseball didn't return to the city again until 1996, with the arrival of the Delmarva Shorebirds, who still play today at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, also home to the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Eastern Shore League was a Class D league that ran on the Delmarva Peninsula across three separate stretches: 1922 to 1928, 1937 to 1941, and 1946 to 1949, with teams drawn from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
