The Seaford Eagles, based in Seaford, Delaware, joined the Eastern Shore League in 1946 as the league reformed after World War II, and played through the league's final season in 1949. The club was formed by selling public shares at $10 each, and the Eagles name itself came from a public naming contest, won by a local resident named Arnold Spicer.
Seaford won the 1947 Eastern Shore League championship, beating Cambridge in a seven-game series, 4 games to 3, as a New York Giants affiliate. Seaford's baseball roots ran deeper than the Eastern Shore League itself: future major leaguers Eddie Rommel, who went on to a long career as an American League umpire after his playing days, and Jimmy Dykes, a longtime MLB manager, both got their starts playing for Seaford semi-pro teams as far back as 1918.
The Eastern Shore League was a Class D league that ran on the Delmarva Peninsula across three separate stretches: 1922 to 1928, 1937 to 1941, and 1946 to 1949, with teams drawn from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
